About

Quiet, composed, waiting.

Jimmy JL, self-portrait with a rangefinder camera

I was born in Hong Kong and raised in London.

Photography found me through Fan Ho. His images, and the stories behind them, made me want to see the street the way he did. I have been looking ever since.

My frames are quiet and composed. I work from a distance and wait, letting a single figure settle into place against geometry, repetition, and texture.

People say the pictures are melancholy. To me, black and white is a departure from reality. Stripped of literal colour, an image stays open, so you finish it with your own eye, and the story shifts a little each time you return to it.

From the symmetry of buildings to the rhythm of a crowd, I try to hold the small nuances of urban life, in Hong Kong and in the cities I keep returning to.
